Volunteering

One of the most meaningful parts of my life involves mentoring young journalists, the next generation of leaders. Beyond hiring and mentoring college interns at CNN, I’ve been working with teens for a decade as a volunteer at VOX ATL, a teen-led journalism outlet and non-profit. While not every teen I work with wants to be a reporter or an editor, I teach them how to write effectively and navigate the adult world. And they inspire me to look at the world in a different way. I was honored as the organization's Volunteer of the Year in 2015 and I served on the Board of Directors from 2016 to 2022, including serving as the Board Chair in my final year.

Here are some of the ways I help VOX ATL:

  • Story coach teens in one-on-one editing sessions

  • Host students for shadow days at work

  • Organize and participate in journalism workshops

  • Recruit other journalists to come volunteer

  • Fundraise for teen scholarships, transit passes and more

  • Help organize fundraising events, from soliciting auction items to finding event sponsors
